Church of St. John the Baptist - Charleston, SC

This project is in: All Projects, Religious Design

A $2 million renovation of a National Register listed Gothic Revival landmark, including enlargement of the sanctuary, restoration of plaster and marble ornament, and repair of copper and slate roofing.   Careful design work successfully integrated new air conditioning, acoustic improvements and new audio systems, new lighting, elevator and toilet rooms, discreetly within the building footprint.  Sanctuary expansion was achieved by disassembling and relocating historic marble altarpiece forward, using available space within the sacristy.   Return-air duct runs were buried beneath new exterior walkway paving along foundations while waterproofing membranes were installed to resist chronic flooding conditions at this below-sea level site. A ground-mounted air-cooled chiller was placed between building and surrounding perimeter walls.  Practically no alterations can be detected visually at exterior or interior.

Building conditions documentation, historical research, project design solutions, historic review board approvals, and construction documents produced by Eugene Aleci,  AIA, while employed by architect-of-record  Arthur Cotton Moore / Associates, PC.
