Columbia Market House - Columbia, PA
This project is in: All Projects, Civic and Cultural Planning and Design
Owned and operated by the Borough since 1869, the Columbia Market House was a longtime symbol of community life and downtown vitality, linking farmers from Lancaster and York Counties with the heart of the old town center. Today, the Market House is a key component in the Borough’s new commitment to strengthening local quality of life and setting a new preservation-oriented direction for downtown reinvestment. Combining our knowledge of the history and function of farmers’ markets with our experience in rehabilitating historic buildings, we assisted the Borough in exploring the building’s potential for new uses that are both economically viable and appropriate to its historic character. Because we believe the best design solutions for such buildings can only come out of an engaging, broad-based community discussion, we helped the Borough to develop a process for encouraging public participation. This process resulted in an implementation action plan which is directing the future of the old market.
