Stevens and Smith Historic Site - Lancaster, PA

This project is in: All Projects, Museums and Historic Sites

The Stevens-Smith Site encompasses six historic buildings in downtown Lancaster, including the house and law office of abolitionist Congressman Thaddeus Stevens.  Our work has involved documentation of existing conditions and the design and architectural engineering necessary to stabilize, rehabilitate and restore these buildings, as well as an underground cistern believed by archaeologists to have been used to hide fugitive slaves during Stevens’ lifetime. Our design for the project aims to recapture Lancaster’s 19th century urban character while fitting seamlessly around an adjacent convention center and hotel built immediately adjacent to the site.
